Teaching the Art (of War) of Crowd Management

Recent conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan have unfortunately seen insurgents turn civilian environments into combat zones. As a result, many missions are now being conducted in densely populated, often volatile, urban areas. Safe and effective training for these missions has become a key training need for many armed forces.

Simulating a natural pattern-of-life background environment is essential to effective urban warfare training. Crowd Ambience and Traffic Ambience seamlessly integrate with VBS to breathe civilian life into any VBS training environment. In just a few mouse clicks, Crowd Ambience can populate your scenario with hundreds, even thousands, of civilians. Likewise, Traffic Ambience quickly adds intelligent and dynamic background traffic to your scenario, creating a much more realistic - and naturally chaotic - civilian environment for urban warfare training.

The use and potential of these products, however, does not begin and end with training for urban combat operations. For peacekeeping, for policing, for crowd control, and for convoy training (especially in urban areas), Crowd and Traffic Ambience add depth and dimension to VBS training in all fields.

As we prepare to join the worlds leading providers of military simulation and training at ITEC later this month, we look forward to sharing with you our latest innovations, and how they will support you in meeting your rapidly changing training needs.

Warm regards

Crowd and Traffic Ambience

Crowd and Traffic Ambience add instant pattern of life to any VBS scenario. With just a few mouse clicks, your scenario can be filled with realistic civilian and vehicle movement and behavior, providing a more rich and immersive virtual training environment.
Crowd Ambience breathes life into your virtual cities. It  is fully integrated so that civilians will interact, avoid, and respond to gunfire from units. Not only that, Crowd Ambience is optimised so that it can support many more simulated people than VBS can support on its own. This balance of high entity counts and tight integration makes Crowd Ambience truly unique. Demographics and ethnic mix, as well as behaviour and crowd density, can all be easily configured to match the training requirement.
Traffic Ambience provides realistic traffic simulation for VBS. It is able to work with any terrain out of the box as it can automatically recognize the road network, along with junctions and lanes. The vehicles will obey road rules, perform lane changes, overtake and can navigate intersections. The side of the road and vehicle behavior can be modified so that you can simulate a developed countrys traffic style as well as the more chaotic traffic patterns seen in developing countries. Vehicles respond dynamically to obstacles on the road, so that roadblocks can be created and traffic jams will form emergently. Vehicles can be damaged and will avoid externally or player-controlled vehicles or humans on the roads. Traffic lights, uncontrolled intersections, multi-lane roads, and vehicle overtaking are all supported.
Crowd and Traffic Ambience both ship with a scripting interface, which allows behavior to be customised for any training scenario.

SimCentric at ITEC 2015

SimCentric is heading to Prague in the Czech Republic for ITEC, from the 28 - 30 April 2015. We will be showcasing Crowd Ambience and Traffic Ambience, VBS3Fires and VBS3Fires FST, as well as the recently enhanced VBSFusion.
VBS3Fires is a professional Call-For-Fire training application; VBS3Fires FST is a Joint Fires training application. Both products combine the flexibility and stunning visuals of VBS, with a highly sophisticated call-for-fire training and simulation system. VBS3Fires FST is designed to facilitate the training of a Forward Air Controller, and uses its internal AI engine to determine aircraft flight patterns and attack profiles, based on the values entered into the system.
We are also very excited to be demonstrating our new classroom training management software for use with VBS3.

We will be presenting about Making complex software simple: Enhancing training capability in VBS3 at the Innovation Showcase at 4pm on Tue 28 April. We are also working with Bohemia Interactive Simulations to conduct an Integration Workshop focussed on integrating with and developing for VBS3. This will be held at 13.30 on Tue 28 April. You can register for the VBS Integration Workshop here.

We would love to see you at ITEC - come and meet the team and discover the plans for VBS3Fires and VBS3Fires FST in 2015 and beyond! You will find us at booth #4A-300, or email Adam Easton, adam.easton@simct.com to arrange a meeting with us. Media and press inquiries, please contact sadielockett@ruddynice.com

Case Study: Italian FAC Simulator

Looking for ways to build virtual environments that would allow Forward Air Controller trainees to practice tactics, techniques and procedures not easily replicable in real environments and save on training costs, the Scuola di Aerocooperazione (Italian Joint Air Operation School) located in Guidonia, Italy, developed a training program and simulator system using VBS2, together with Fires and Strike (Now Fires FST).

The FAC Simulator was formally accredited in December 2014. VBS2, Fires and Strike are used to train FACs to plan, prepare and virtually execute simple and complex Close Air Support missions, using and simultaneously coordinating artillery, mortars and naval gun assets.
